We spent the weekend decorating for Halloween and now, each morning, when our children wake up we have to explain to them that Halloween is still weeks away. The pumpkins are carved and the candle flickers giving our jack-o-lectern a soft glow into the window. Cobwebs are hung and spiders litter the front yard waiting for trick or treater’s to arrive. Orange bulbs light the path to the front door so children don’t trip on their way up our driveway to gather their treats. A bale of hay surrounded by fall mums adores our front porch and holds up a scarecrow keeping watch over the street. The kid’s plastic pumpkins sit on our kitchen table waiting for action on October 31st.
Each morning, our daughter puts on her Halloween costume and insists on trying to wear it to preschool. Our son changes his mind about which costume he wants to wear, sending me to the local drug store trying to find a reasonable outfit for a toddler. My spiced pumpkin scented jar candles burn each evening and fill the house with the aroma of baking pumpkin pie. Halloween is quickly approaching and when I close my eyes, I can smell the autumn air and richly scented candles signaling the holiday’s arrival.
