So I was watching Andrew Zimmern’s show on the Food Channel the other day, and as usual he was in an unusual spot exploring their food. Texas. Okay, well most of Texas isn’t that unusual, but in this episode he was at the Kennedy Space Center (or is that the one in Florida?) exploring how they prepare food for the astronauts.
It was pretty interesting because it showed that they no longer used freeze dried powdered food or tubes of God-knows-what. Instead, they prepare food rather gourmet style in regular industrial kitchens and then flash freeze and vacuum pack them. Then, on board, the astronauts plug the package into this contraption and set specific settings for time, heat and water needed. The food is darned recognizable now, though Andrew felt a lot of it ended up rather gummy.
The whole show reminded me of that Apollo 11 movie where the astronaut had to pee right in his suit. How do they take care of Urinary Problems on the Space Shuttle, anyway? Do they just wear Condom catheters? And of course that lets your mind wander to the bigger question: what do they do with, uh, you know? With no gravity and all?
