You’ve probably heard that the average American family has 2.5 kids and a dog.  That seems to be the traditional American dream, at any rate.  I’ve known a lot of people who would add “and a boat” to that list of things the average family is supposed to dream of having.

I grew up close to a reservoir and state park, but I didn’t know many people growing up who had their own boat.  These days, however, it seems to be more common: I still live in the area, and frequently on the weekends I see trucks and SUVs heading toward the park towing a shiny speed boat behind them.

Owning a boat requires a lot of attention to maintenance and repairs.  You’ll need to make sure the boat is in tip-top shape at the beginning of every season before you take it out for the first time, and you will of course need to do regular maintenance and buy boat parts for repairs as needed.

That being said, I think many families are realizing owning a boat isn’t as far out of their league as they once might have thought.  It’s the only way of explaining why it’s so much more  common these days for people to have their own boats.
