It’s becoming popular for people to try to reduce their carbon footprints, and as a result a lot of businesses are “going green.” Green businesses seem to have a distinct advantage in the marketplace when their market consists of a population that is fairly conscientious about the damage we do to the environment.
But at work isn’t the only place we need to think about going green. Many people are quite wasteful at home, so it’s important to focus some of our efforts there, too. The home office is a great place to start.
Whether or not you run a business out of your home, you can make a pretty big difference just by reducing or digitalizing your paper trail. For instance, many banks and credit card companies now allow you to receive and pay your bill online. This helps to reduce paper use (your printed bill, check, and envelope), not to mention it also helps to reduce the demand on the mail service, which burns fuel and creates pollution in order to deliver your payment.
Another advantage is that less paperwork (or, more accurately, more digitalized paperwork) creates a cleaner, less wasteful office. Just think if you can eliminate a lifetime of paperwork. How many thousands of filing folders (which are paper) can you save? How many filing boxes and cabinets?
Luckily, you can reap the advantages of digitalized paperwork, even if you’ve been using hardcopies all along. With the services of a document imaging service and their high volume scanners, all of those paper copies can be turned into electronic files and the hardcopies can be discarded.
Going green at home may take a few adjustments, but in the end it is quite liberating. Less muss means less fuss, so in the end it benefits YOU as well as the environment!
